Traffic Garden

Siliguri, a bustling city in North Bengal, serves as a vital gateway connecting the northeastern states of India with the rest of the country. Its strategic location has led to rapid urbanization, resulting in significant traffic challenges. The city’s roadways, including Hill Cart Road, Sevoke Road, and Burdwan Road, often experience congestion due to a mix of vehicles, pedestrians, and hawkers.

Traffic Management Initiatives

To address these issues, the Siliguri Metropolitan Police has implemented various measures. Barriers have been installed at key junctions like Venus More, Darjeeling More, and Sevoke More to streamline traffic flow. Additionally, a special traffic police team has been formed to tackle unauthorized parking within the city.

Infrastructure Developments

Recognizing the need for improved infrastructure, several projects have been initiated:

  • Burdwan Road Flyover: Construction of a flyover from Burdwan Road to Mahatma Gandhi More has resumed after a two-year hiatus. This project aims to alleviate congestion in the area.

  • Station Feeder Road Widening: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC), in collaboration with the state Public Works Department, is widening a 1.3-kilometer stretch of Station Feeder Road to ease traffic movement.

  • Alternative Bus Terminals: New bus terminals are being developed at Tinbatti More and Paribahan Nagar to reduce congestion at the Tenzing Norgay Central Bus Terminus.

Parking Solutions

To address the shortage of parking spaces, the SMC has undertaken the development of multi-storey parking facilities. A six-storey building near Panitanki More is under construction, which will provide parking for approximately 50 vehicles.

Pedestrian Infrastructure

Improving walkability is a priority. Plans include the development of footpaths, pedestrian overpasses, and underpasses to ensure safe movement for pedestrians.

Environmental Considerations

The SMC is also focusing on environmental aspects by planning the beautification of the Mahananda River banks and the construction of green spaces to enhance the city’s aesthetics and provide recreational areas for residents.
